Tesla Camera Captures Drunk Hit-Run Driver 2X Legal Limit In Stafford: Sheriff

A 37-year-old Stafford woman was more than twice the legal limit when she struck a Tesla with a child in her car, then fled the scene, authorities said.

Karen Huff Herrera allegedly hit the parked Tesla on Lansberry Park Drive around 8:45 p.m. Sunday. Feb. 25, the Stafford County Sheriff's Office said in a release.

The Tesla owner called police to report the incident, and even though Harrera had fled, the man's Tesla captured the incident on camera, police said.

Camera footage showed Herrera's Jeep backing up and hitting the unoccupied vehicle, then driving away.

A few minutes later, Deputy Fulford observed that same Jeep arrive on scene. Herrera admitting to driving it when the Tesla was hit, police said. 

She further explained it was an accident while dropping off two children at that location, but it came to light another child was in the Jeep, police said. 

Deputy Fulford noted several signs of intoxication, but Herrera also admitted to drinking White Claws before driving the three children.

Herrera was charged with driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content above .2, as well as, three counts of child endangerment. She was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.

According to the Tesla website, the vehicles' cameras and sensors, if equipped, "remain powered on and ready to record suspicious activity around your vehicle when Model 3 is locked and in park.

"Think of Sentry Mode as an intelligent vehicle security system that alerts you when it detects possible threats nearby."
